L'interview chez Fortnum and Mason

Paul Symes worked at Selfridges for 12 years. Then, he started at Fortnum & Mason as a free lance consultant. Little by little, he took this position three years ago.
1- What’s a window for you ?
A window is like a painting ; it’s a one thing.
You stop and you think in front of a great display. It’s not an education ; it’s just beautiful !
2- Is there any special way to create a window in London ?
I could say that here we are allowed to choose. None tells us what we have to put in a window.
We show people what they can expect inside the store instead of showing everything.
3- Where do you find your inspiration ?
Most of the inspiration comes from natural thinking. Last Spring, I thought of flowers eating a pie because of its form ! We also have team meetings to share our ideas. Things become bigger!
4- What’s your favorite season to create windows ?
I love Fall ! There are many colors and changes. The evenings become darker and creating windows makes people feel warm. It’s a magic season !

5- What windows are you fan of ?
I like Bergdorf displays for the details, Barneys for the humor and Selfridges for fun. I also like Anthropologie, Ralph Lauren, Galeries Lafayette and many boutiques in Paris.
6- What’s the trend for the holiday windows ?
I think it’s less about saving ! Holiday windows display more things ; there is more opulence and accumulation.
7- So, lets’ talk about Fortnum & Mason holiday windows…
We decided the theme of this year together with three other people in charge of other areas of the store. The best way for us to interprete the trends was the story of the Swan Lake. Every year, we create six windows that explain a traditional story. Then, we also find this story inside the store. This year, you can find feathers inside to go on with the window story. We started working on this theme one year ago !
8- What do you enjoy the most in your job ?
I enjoy setting in a window, with no phone and no meetings, doing groups. I like dressing windows ; it’s my best therapy !

Thank you Paul for this fabulous interview. I can’t wait for seeing the Spring windows…

Welcome to Paul Smith window world

Bonjour, Lance Martins! Lance Martins is the  Display Manager at Paul Smith. He began his career playing with shoes at Bally; then, moved to Paul Smith UK 18 years ago. As we sipped an earl grey  tea in his London office, we talked of the fabulous world of Paul Smith  windows. I was transfixed as I was listening to him. Martins is passionate, fascinating and very creative.
1- In a few words, what defines the brand Paul Smith?
Paul Smith loves people, so he creates clothes for human beings. He does something for everyone; it's not cold, it's not hard and it's not uncomfortable.
2- How do you see your job at Paul Smith?
The best thing I love from my job is variety. I never get bored! Things change every day; there is always something new to find. So, I have constantly a real challenge! With my team, three people, we provide services to the stores. We collaborate with the shop managers to create the windows. We are in charge of the eleven stores in UK and check what international stores propose for their windows. In London, we change the displays every two weeks because people get bored very quickly. The other British stores windows change every month.
3- I 'm a big fan of your New York windows, but I saw they were different in Paris. However, is there a guide line for the windows?
You will never see the same windows all over the world! I'm happy you liked the New York windows. The most important is to have a good execution.A window can't be dirty! Sometimes, we choose a humorous way, but it's never too pushy. However, the windows are always engaging with yourself. The windows depend on the clothes themselves and the space we have in the store. The clothes are the center! Each window is different because  we do not want people to see the same windows in London, in Milan , in Paris, in New York. We want  people to discover a special Paul Smith space in the city they live or buy.
4- Which windows do you prefer creating?
I love all the different stores we have. They are all very different. And, I enjoy the challenge of all this differences.
5- What are your favorite windows in the world?
In London, I like the Moschino windows because of the way they create them and their humorous touch. I'm a big fan of the Japanese stores. Japan is full of contradictions and we find this feeling in the windows and the stores. For stores, Tokyo is really amazing. If you go there, you always buy something!
Thank you so much, Lance! See you in Paris!

Hi Lance Martins!
A bientôt à Paris!

Prochaine interview  à Paris, la semaine prochaine...Next week, I'll meet .....in Paris!

Talking at Liberty...

Liberty, bonjour!
Last week, I met Maxine Groucutt, Head of Visual Identity at Liberty.  She is very dynamic, passionate and a big fan of her store. Here is our talk about the visual world...
1- What drew you to this visual world?
It was a happy accident! I have always loved the visual merchandising. I started at Miss Selfridge. Then, I was able to mix the creative and commercial visions. It's really important to connect marketing, visual and retail.
2- Why did you choose Liberty?
Liberty is the most beautiful store! I've been working at Liberty for six years. Now, I manage twelve people.I came when the store started to change. And, it always goes on changing. I like these changes and the fact that people who work here are very open-minded. We have a real relation ship with this store.
3- What do you enjoy the most about your job?
I have a fantastic team. We have a lot of freedom and can be very creative. Here, people are very passionate and support each other.
4- What's Liberty for you?
Liberty is luxury, avant-garde and British. Luxury because we sell the best of the best. Avant-garde because of the way we display products. British because it was founded in London!
5- What are the things Liberty does the best?
Liberty understands very well its customers. The store has created a real relation ship with them. It has great displays with a high level of details. It also changes constantly.
6- Let's talk about windows, now. What's a window for you?
A window creates an image for the customers. It has to make people come to the store. A window needs to have the right mix of creation, representation of the season and products  of the store. Finally, it has to make people stop, look at the products and go inside. Once, a  customer told me that she missed three buses looking at the Liberty windows!
7- What are the biggest inspirations for you?
Everything I see inspires me: fashion, design, exhibitions, magazines. I also look at other windows in other cities like Milan, Paris, LA and New York, of course, for Christmas.
8-Which windows do you specially like creating?
I like creating fashion week windows because they are about British designers and more avant-garde. I also love Christmas windows since it's just crazy to do them.
9- Which windows are you fan of except the Liberty ones?
I like Lanvin windows in Paris and the  Bergdorf ones in New York.
10-What are the upcoming trends for windows?
I think we are going to be more creative and that  will be more interesting due to the economic environment. We will need to make people feel like super heroes and dream of fantasy. We will have to think more about people next to you. Next windows at Liberty will be about loving your home . Christmas will be crazy, fun and cool. Liberty will always keep its sense of humor!
Thank you so much , Maxine for this fabulous talk!
Tomorrow, we will take a walk at Liberty!
